My Inspiration: Artists all over the world who have the courage to follow their vision to create thoughtful, original work that honors authenticity, complexity, roots and soul, despite the pressures to "dumb down" and go the commercial route.

Greatest career success: Producing a CD that hit #1 on jazz stations all over the country and getting to tour internationally on the strength of that. One of my best memories is performing with Lionel Hampton, Elvin Jones, Hank Jones and Herb Ellis (some of my biggest musical heroes) in front of 10,000 fans at a festival. The smiling faces on these legendary cats when I was singing was the ultimate gift.

My favorite pair of Harry Mason Earspirals: The ones I am wearing on the cover of my third Mad-Kat CD, "Straight Up With a Twist." The earrings add a very hip visual twist to go with the vibe of the music. (53CZO)

How I make a difference in the world: Spreading joy. Music has the power to bring people from extremely diverse backgrounds together in a magical way that erases all our superficial differences. At its best, it is a very healing force. I am also happy about helping to spawn a new generation of jazz singers and afficionados through my teaching work, both at home and on the road. I love using my music to help raise money for causes I believe in passionately.

My greatest personal achievement: Having a great relationship with my husband.
